Exhibitions Friesland

Friesland offers a wealth of cultural highlights, including the Fries Museum and the Princessehof Ceramics Museum in Leeuwarden. Both museums guarantee an inspiring mix of history, art and unique exhibitions you won't want to miss.

Fries Museum: ‘Yes, I want to!’

The Fries Museum in Leeuwarden has the largest regional collection in the Netherlands, with more than 200,000 objects showcasing the history and culture of Friesland. One of its most popular exhibitions is ‘Yes, I want!’, on show until 16 February 2025. This exhibition shows the development of the wedding dress from the 18th century to today. What does a wedding dress tell about the bride? How has the dress changed over time? One of the highlights is Queen Máxima's famous wedding dress. This exhibition gives a unique look at fashion, tradition and personal stories.

The Fries Museum has more to offer than just fashion. Also visit the Fries Verzetsmuseum, where you can learn more about World War II in Friesland. The museum brings this period to life with personal objects and stories. Whether you come for a day trip or plan a weekend in Leeuwarden, the Fries Museum is a must-see.

Ceramics museum exhibition

The Princessehof Ceramics Museum, within walking distance of the Fries Museum, is housed in a beautiful 18th-century city palace. A must-see for ceramics lovers, this museum now has the exhibition Wu Zetian - The First Female Emperor of China, on display until 25 May 2025. The exhibition takes you back to the court of the Tang Dynasty and tells the story of Wu Zetian, the woman who became the only emperor in Chinese history. You will see rare ceramic art, historical objects and learn more about China's culture and history.
